Frederick S. Hammett (Hammett, 1924) at the Wistar published, in the early 1920s, approximately 20 studies involving thyroidectomies and parathyroidectomies in rats. Smith, an associate of Herbert Evans, succeeded in hypophysectomizing rats by the parapharyngeal approach (Smith, 1927).
