Frederick S. Hammett (Hammett, 1924) at the Wistar published, in the early 1920s, approximately 20 studies involving thyroidectomies and parathyroidectomies in rats. The most notable achievement in this succession, however, came in 1927 when Phillip E. Smith, an associate of Herbert Evans, succeeded in hypophysectomizing rats by the parapharyngeal approach (Smith, 1927). These techniques, as well as others, served as a pivotal base for the establishment of the rat as the prime animal subject in experimental endocrinology.

The combined presence of these two great men provided an unusually fertile environment for behavioral research. Watson’s work, in particular, was to give further impetus to use of the rat in research. According to Munn (Munn, 1950), the most influential book in bringing about the rapid growth of animal psychology was Watson’s Behavior: An Introduction to Comparative Psychology, published in 1914. Although Watson believed that animal research would contribute much to the understanding of fundamental processes underlying human behavior, he also believed that animal research had a right to exist for its own sake.
