We do not share the view that Europeanization is simply a 'faddish' term (Featherstone, 2003: 1), or that it has limited utility as an organizing concept (Kassim, 2000: 238). On the contrary, it is now being used to shed light on the dynamics of the EU enlargement process (Schimmelfennig and Sedelmeier, 2005), both in terms of the acceptance and assimilation of the formal acquis communautaire by accession states, and in terms of the pressures on accession states to conform to less formal, but nonetheless important, norms of democratic behaviour - that is, acceptance of both the 'regulatory pillar' and the 'normative pillar' (Bulmer and Radaelli 2004: 2).
Exemplars of this approach is Franchino and Radaelli (2004) and Ugland (2003); 30 The Europeanization of British Politics 3. actively exploring the counterfactual; that is, what would have happened without the EU? (Anderson, 2003: 47-48; Radaelli, 2004: 8; Schmitter, 1999); 4. comparing states within and outside the EU (see Jordan and Liefferink, 2004). We comment on how our chapter authors handled the issue of causality in the concluding chapter. Political dynamics Finally, there is a need to respond to the criticism made by Mair (2004), among others, that existing Europeanization research has focused on institutional dynamics to the relative neglect of political dynamics (see Category 6 above, for example).

Indeed, recent work does seem to suggest that some of the first generation of Europeanization scholars (those who - to quote Radaelli (2004: 44) performed 'impact studies' in a narrowly defined area of national political life) greatly underestimated the potential for significant domestic change to emerge via less hierarchical and coercive processes (see the discussion of Europeanization via facilitated coordination above).
