Possess a planktic precursor whose taxonomic affiliation with the family Anisograptidae has never been in doubt; whereas the sessile forms, with their Silurian-type form, Dictyonema retiforme (Hall 1843), are unequivocal members of the family Dendrograptidae (see Fig. ).
