7 Even if energy prices had no effect on food prices at the farm level, consumer food prices would rise when energy prices increase because of the cost of getting food from the farm to the plate. Much of the world’s food is consumed far from where it is produced. Higher fuel costs have obvious impacts on the cost of moving food across the country or around the world. S. Midwest are produced in California, Florida, Mexico, or Chile. S. grains and oilseeds are shipped around the world, as are Australian beef, Brazilian orange juice, Colombian coffee, and Spanish olive oil.

The reverse is also true. Lower energy prices reduce farm production costs and the cost of getting food from the farm to the plate. Lower oil prices also are likely to make biofuel production less profitable, and this translates into less demand for grain, sugar, and vegetable oil. Just as rising oil prices can push up food prices, falling oil prices can put downward pressure on food prices. This brings us to another rule of thumb: Food prices tend to move with crude oil prices. The linkages between energy and food prices could get even stronger in the years ahead.

Livestock producers are also affected by any change in feed costs that result from changes in energy prices. As with the crop sector, higher production costs only translate into higher prices for meat, poultry, and dairy products if at least some farmers and ranchers reduce production in response to reduced profits. Fuel Costs and Getting Food from the Farm to the Plate In high-income countries, most of the consumer’s food dollar pays for costs incurred after food leaves the farm, and many of those costs are tied to energy prices.
