Gaitskell, who had moved closer to Jay’s position by 1937, did not accept the full force of his argument. It was not until the shortcomings of physical planning and the controversies over the future of public ownership undermined the Attlee government after 1947 that Labour’s future leader finally accepted the logic of the Keynesian socialist position.
