As the listener/questioner, PE is actively engaged in maintaining the conversation with Lance, this 16-year-old boy who has, in his own words, sexually abused ‘several boys’ (l. 102). In stark contrast, for instance, to Mishler’s (1994: 7) interview experience of uninterrupted ‘12–13 minute’ narrator responses, at no point during the roughly two hours of Lance’s two interviews did he narrate in ‘chunks’ of more than four or five lines of raw text. Our own personal and clinical and research experience of talking with adolescent boys suggests that an absence of extended monologue is not uncharacteristic – in fact, perhaps the persistence of Lance’s actual responsiveness could be seen as more uncharacteristic.
3), we have introduced stanzas, strophes and ‘parts’ for organising even this brief personal narrative section, we delay discussion of these larger linguistic ‘building blocks’ for our analysis of an extended stretch of Lance’s narrative text in the following chapters. Here, based on multiple listening to the audiotaped interview, slashes separate idea units if more than one per line, capitals represent focuses, and main line parts of the plot are underlined; pauses are identified by, for example (2 secs) and line breaks indicate Lance’s pacing of his phrases around pauses or slight hesitations.
In this account of his experienced cycle of abuse, Lance situates himself in relation Questioning and Transcribing 43 to, rather than in deviation from, a canonical narrative of ‘MOST people’. Riessman (1993) points out that Gee’s (1991a) framework has the danger of stripping the narrative from its interview context; her own interest in Mishler’s (1986a, 1994) view of interviews as a form of discourse, suggests the importance of developing the analysis of personal narrative in this wider context.
