Example text

This is meant to represent extraneous factors which may impinge on the clear transmission of a ‘pure’ message. Hence, between the signal as transmitted and the signal as received, environmental or contextual phenomena may come into play so that the received signal is not the same as the signal transmitted, but a distorted or otherwise altered version of it. In Saussure’s model, communication is depicted as occurring unproblematically by means of clear lines connecting each of the participants. The introduction of the ‘noise source’ is a further example of a metaphor drawn from technology.

33) and that the technology-as-text metaphor ‘does not mean that any interpretation is as good as any other’ (p. 32). Yet because of their preferred focus, it is not clear what the status of such ‘materiality’ might be nor where such ‘effects’ might derive from. The problem is that the textual metaphor leads them to focus almost entirely on the question of representations of technologies. A general strategy is to observe that a given technological form (for instance, a bridge) can be represented in at least two competing ways and then show that both these representations are based on some conception of ‘inherent’ characteristics, whereas the more appropriate procedure is to analyse the discursive practices through which one interpretation wins out over another.

The problems lie in two areas. One is conceptual: to what extent is it meaningful to say that people communicate by means of acoustic wave forms, with the corresponding belief in the central role played by the brain in computing these wave forms into ‘messages’? The second problem is empirical: how can we go about analysing human communication if, as the computational model implies, the key 42 Communication as Computation? processes take place inside people’s heads? What I will argue is that these problems render the computational model inadequate as the basis for empirical research on conversational interaction.
