What use(s)do you make of a~srllent? 3 Student teachers and planning Planning is one of the areas of competence specified in the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) (DfEE 1998a). A student's plans, therefore, fulfil a dual role. On the one hand, they are working documents and completing them helps students to 'translate ideas about what they would like to happen into guidelines for action in the classroom' (Husbands 1999: 44). Written plans also provide evidence which will be used for formal assessment purposes.

Previous experiences of failure may have conditioned them to expect to fail and so learning is perceived as threatening to the self. Consequently, children shrink from it in an attempt at self-protection. Failure avoidance leads them to reject risks and challenges where possible or give up easily when they encounter difficulties. They have a feeling of powerlessness, attributing difficulties to their own inability to learn, and believing there is nothing they can do to improve their intelligence or their likelihood of success.

When the pupil performed a wrong action, the student intervened and asked him to explain it. The pupil explained his thinking and the conversation continued for several minutes with the student using questions to scaffold the pupil's learning and correct errors. The student then continued to circulate, checking individuals' progress and dealing with questions. During post-lesson feedback, I focused the discussion on assessment. The student replied defensively that assessment wasn't appropriate in this lesson because he had only just introduced the topic and, anyway, he planned to set homework on it later which he would take in and mark.
